French Clock Suspensions

Metal end French clock suspensions are used in all types of French mantel clocks to suspend the pendulum from the movement.

The top brass block fitted to the French clock suspension is pinned securely into the back cock bracket at the top rear part of the movement.  The bottom brass block has a steel pin inserted into it allowing the pendulum hook to clip over the pin and locate either side of the block.  In operation the flexible spring steel strip between the two brass blocks allows the pendulum to swing freely, but this is also the part of the suspension that tends to fail over time, and typically if the clock is moved with the pendulum still attached.

There are differences in many of the dimensions of the clock suspension and care should be taken to select the correct one.
