Brown Antiquing Fluid
Our brown antiquing fluid is a cold patination treatment used to provide an antique brown finish on brass, copper and bronze.
Colour
Colouration can be varied by dilution and contact time.
A very strong solution and longer contact time will give a darker colour, though this is not recommended, as a thick patina may not attach as effectively.
Preparation
The surface of the metal must be totally clean for the antiquing fluid to give you a consistent colour and coverage.
A slight key is also an advantage, using an abrasive pad or wire wool on smooth or polished surfaces.
We would recommend the use of our pre-treatment to remove any grease, varnish, oil or fingerprints.
The surface should be washed off with water and not handled after cleaning.
Application
The solution can be painted on to new bright brass or submerged in a 5-1 dilution with water for smaller items.
The finish will appear in 5 to 30 seconds, depending on dilution.
When the required colour is reached the metal surface should be rinsed thoroughly with clean water to remove the antiquing fluid and kill the reaction.
The item should then be dried carefully either in a warm room, radiator or warm air gun. There is an advantage to drying of cast iron or steel parts quickly as they will rapidly rust on contact with water.
Fixing/Sealing
Once the patina is totally dry and the reaction has been stopped the item will require sealing.
Oil, waxes or lacquer can be used depending on the application of your work piece.
Oils and waxes enhance the patina, giving it a depth of colour and seal the part preventing air and moisture continuing the reaction.
Lacquer is less forgiving but is useful on items in areas of high abrasion such as bar tops or handrails.
